The master at work
The master at work

[By Murray Dewhurst in Auckland]
Our old car has been pretty hassle free transport in recent years, but in the lead up to Christmas the petrol pump had been cutting in and out from time to time. Id only just made it home a few times before the engine would splutter out. I was thankful it didnt play up in peak hour motorway traffic but it was definitely time for a visit to the master.
Current day mechanics just dont get old cars. They dont fit with todays disposable approach to life. I once failed a Warrant of Fitness (MOT inspection) because my brakes were pulling to the left a little, so a mechanic removed all the brakes and hubs off the car and ordered brand new ones from the UK! Suffice to say I never went there again.
Anyway Garth has been Aucklands resident MG specialist for decades. Here he is working some magic on the old but serviceable petrol pump in his workshop just before Christmas. As he was working (and I was sketching) the heater tap sprung a leak too so we fixed that at the same time - good timing.
