Adobe AIR adalah cross platform runtime system yang memungkinkan web developer untuk mengembangkan dan menjalankan RIA (Rich Internet Application) layaknya aplikasi desktop.
Istilah AIR sendiri merupakan singkatan dari Adobe Integrated Runtime.
Dengan Adobe AIR web developer bisa membangun aplikasi desktop dengan HTML, JavaScript, Flex dan Flash. Berbeda dengan aplikasi web pada umumnya, aplikasi AIR ini di-install pada desktop dan bisa beroperasi secara offline. Karakteristiknya hampir sama dengan aplikasi desktop biasa.
Aplikasi AIR memiliki kemampuan untuk mengakses data yang tersimpan pada komputer lokal. Jadi dengan kata lain AIR bisa menyimpan, membuka, dan mengedit data atau informasi pada komputer client. Ini yang membedakannya dengan aplikasi web biasa yang berjalan di browser.
Beberapa pada patch kali ini merupakan pengembangan resolusi menjadi lebih besar, yaitu 4095 x 4095 pixel, pengembangan interaksi aplikasi dengan printer sehingga memungkinkan konfigurasi yang lebih optimal, dan pengembangan input teks berbasis IME.Juga peningkatan keamanan dengan menggunakan soket TLS terenkripsi, dan kemampuan untuk akses MAC address.
Contoh aplikasi yang dikembangkan dengan Adobe AIR yaitu eBay Desktop yang memungkinkan user untuk melakukan transaksi di situs eBay melalui aplikasi desktop tanpa harus selalu terhubung dengan Internet.
